STRIKING UP:
CONVERSATION.
PERFORMANCE.
ART.

by Andres D. Bravo, Grace H. Bryan, Theo Canty, Samantha Corbitt, Casey Deming, Ebony Payne-English, Ryan Sinclair with Associate Artistic Director Kelby Siddons

in partnership with the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens

What do we choose to protect, and what do we choose to destroy? Using the Cummer Museum of Art and Garden's visiting Brooklyn Museum  exhibit Striking Power: Iconoclasm in Ancient Egypt as inspiration, Phase Eight creators delved into the nature of religious artifacts and our historical obsession with their preservation--and their destruction. Their devised theatrical response challenged audiences to think of the objects that hold power in their own lives as well as examine how destruction can be used as a tool of both oppression and liberation.  A curious, wise, deep, and humorous encounter with icons past and present, this devised performance was unfortunately unable to premiere in April 2020 as scheduled because of the necessary response to COVID-19.
"My favorite kind of theatre is theatre that makes you think; a show that leaves you stuck in your seat, wanting just a few more moments to soak up the confrontation you are now faced with processing.  Phase Eight delivered on that."
